Kauai ʻakialoa (Akialoa stejnegeri) - Original Painting
The Kauai ʻakialoa (Akialoa stejnegeri) is believed to have gone extinct largely due to avian malaria, a disease spread by introduced mosquitoes. Native to the Hawaiian island of Kauai, the bird's population was decimated by the disease, as it had no natural resistance to the malaria-causing parasite Plasmodium relictum. Mosquitoes, which arrived with humans, thrived in the island's climate, spreading the infection to native bird species like the Kauai ʻakialoa. This, combined with habitat loss and the introduction of other invasive species, led to the bird's eventual disappearance in the 20th century.
This original painting was created with professional acrylic paint on Ampersand Claybord.
It will be varnished in either Satin or Gloss finish.
